“The subject line is an out of service segment of line the underlying property of which is owned by the Oregon Department of Transportation over which PNWR holds a perpetual freight operating easement,” the filing said. “The subject line has been out of service since 2004 and the last local service over it is believed to have been 2004.”
The railroad said the line is not currently suited for alternative public use; it also said it has “no current plans” to salvage the track.
The Portland & Western’s 516 miles (which includes the Willamette & Pacific) of track run from Portland west along the Columbia to Wauna, and south paralleling the Willamette to Salem and Eugene.
According to a company history, the line was extended by Northern Pacific to Astoria in 1898.
