BALTIMORE — Railroad crews are responding to a train derailment in downtown Baltimore late Friday afternoon.

Early reports indicate that a freight train derailed several cars, including a tank car over a viaduct before entering an underpass or tunnel in the city. The train derailed near the Baltimore Streetcar Museum. The Baltimore Sun reports that the train derailed in the Howard Street Tunnel. CSX Transportation trains use that tunnel.

CSX did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Trains.

The former Baltimore & Ohio line runs north of downtown Baltimore between Bay View Junction in northeast Baltimore and Camden Station on the west side of downtown. South of the derailment site, it traverses the famous Howard Street Tunnel. The line sees freight traffic between Baltimore and Philadelphia.

No injuries have been reported.

  1. Don’s comment is right on. Appropriate train marshalling may get in the way of a theoretical PSR operating plan, since it may take longer at initial terminals and any block swapping locations. That extra time ties up the yard and may (horrors) even require an extra switch crew. Setting up DPUs (sometimes mid-train) also takes time, manpower and track that interferes with both that tightly planned schedule and other trains.

It can take several expensive incidents before the new kids finally comprehend that a derailment interferes even more with PSR.

  2. Video link is live-time feed, so you can enjoy whatever is playing all weekend long. If all you want is the train shots, Google it.

  3. Gerald – Lots of lessons were learned the hard way about train-track dynamics. Not sure the current gang running PSR operations were in on the lessons. We shall see….

  4. Looks like a train make-up problem to me…perhaps something that resulted in the train string-lining at that point. Hard to tell whether the whole train is empties or just some of the cars. Remember, when you make up a train all of the loaded cars should be towards the headend with empties at the rear.

  5. This is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS! Thank God no one was injured or killed! This stuff has got to stop. PTC has nothing to do with this… Either bad infrastructure or mechanical failure is to blame here.
