KEARNEY, N.J. — NJ Transit will join the list of railroads to operate heritage-themed equipment, rolling out six coaches decorated with logos of railroads that operated on parts of its 660-mile system.

To help mark its 40th anniversary, Bombardier multilevel coaches have been wrapped with logos representing the Central Railroad of New Jersey, Conrail, Erie-Lackawanna, the Pennsylvania Railroad, the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Line, and the NJ Department of Transportation.

The cars were unveiled at a news conference at NJ Transit’s Meadowlands Maintenance Center. NJ Transit Spokesperson Nancy Snyder tells Trains News Wire that the six cars will run as a complete train for a few weeks, then as single units in other consists.

The idea was initially presented to senior staff after seeing the success that other railroads had with similar programs of their history and heritage. Class I railroads Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific, and CSX Transportation all have heritage locomotive programs, as does Chicago’s Metra commuter railroad.
