NEW YORK — Amtrak’s last remaining dome car is again set to run on two routes during the fall foliage season in New England.

Great Dome No. 10031, built in 1955 by the Budd Co. for use on Great Northern’s Empire Builder, will operate on the Downeaster (Brunswick, Maine-Boston) between Aug. 11 and Sept. 23, and on the Adirondack (Montreal-New York) from Sept. 27 to Nov. 2.

Seats in the full-length dome are available at no extra cost, but are unreserved and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Amtrak encourages passengers to rotate in and out of the dome to allow more people to experience the view.

Ticket information for both trains is available at amtrak.com.

  1. The ADIRONDACK operates entirely in New York State and the Province of Quebec, not in New England. Vermont is quite visible, however, across Lake Champlain from the former Delaware and Hudson Champlain Division.Certainly a ride worth taking!

  2. “Airline Anderson” must have gotten a lot of pushback from lots of folks … perhaps we will see more PV car moves, restoration of decent meal service on the Capital Limited and Lake Shore Limited, etc.

  3. I didn’t expect to see this car back in New York and New England. Was this an oversight by CEO Anderson? After all, he directed the Downeaster not to operate their planned select weekend extensions of the Downeaster. Or maybe there is starting to be a change of heart?… This is great news, anyway.

  4. Nathan, it’s not exactly foliage season in northern New England either. Maybe a little color in the north of Aroostook County but the Downeaster doesn’t run there.

  5. Amazing that Amtrak can keep this ancient Budd product going, after telling us that the Pacific Parlour Cars were just too old and odd to maintain. Wink wink nudge nudge. Must have imported some VIA people for this task.

  6. Ummmm….August 11 thru Sept 23 is not exactly foliage season in southern New England. Kudos, though, for having the dome car for scenic late summer scenery for 6 weeks.
