CHICAGO — Two Chicago police officers pursuing a suspect on foot were killed when they were struck by a South Shore train on the Metra Electric line Monday night.
The Chicago Tribune reports that officers Eduardo Marmolejo, 36, and Conrad Gary, 31, were pursuing a suspect after a report of shots fired on the city’s Far South Side. Chasing the suspect when he climbed to the Metra tracks, they were hit by the train at the 103rd Street/Rosemore stop.
The accident — the first time since 1990 in which two Chicago police officers were killed in the same incident — occurred about 6:20 p.m. The Metra line was shut down for several hours Monday night. As of the Tuesday morning commute, Metra Electric trains remain subject to delays of up to a half-hour, and South Shore commuter trains are facing delays of up to 45 minutes, because of the ongoing investigation. Trains are not stopping at the 103rd Street station.
A police spokesman told the Tribune a gun was found near the site of the accident and a person of interest was being questioned on Monday night.
The Perp will be charged with two counts of murder. Rest in Peace officers.
