ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Richard Dalton has been confirmed as the acting CEO of Virginia Railway Express following votes by the two agencies which oversee the commuter rail operation.

Dalton had been recommended for the position following the departure of CEO Doug Allen after seven years [see “VRE to seek new CEO,” Trains News Wire, Oct. 18, 2019]. His appointment was confirmed by a Nov. 7 vote of the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission and a Nov. 14 vote of the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission.

Dalton, previously the chief operating officer and deputy CEO, has been with VRE in 2009. A press release says he was “instrumental” in the commuter railroad’s implementation of positive train control, and worked to standardize VRE’s locomotive and car fleet.
