TORONTO — GO Transit will begin regular weekday commuter service to Niagara Falls, Ont., on Jan. 7, 2019, extending a round trip that currently begins and ends in Hamilton.
The Government of Ontario announced last week that train No. 704, which currently departs from the Hamilton West Harbour station at 6:39 a.m., will now originate in Niagara Falls at 5:19 a.m. with an intermediate stop in St. Catherines. In the evening, train No. 581, which departs Toronto Union Station at 5:15 p.m., will be extended to serve St. Catherines and Niagara Falls.
GO Transit has previously offered seasonal, weekend- and holiday-only service to Niagara Falls. In 2018, that service operated from June 22 to September 3, as well as on holiday weekends in May and October.
This train will go right past the end of my back yard, but it won’t stop in Grimsby, the town where I live, although we have a population of about 28,000. Amtrak’s Maple Leaf stops here, but GO Transit can’t be bothered with us.
