LARKSPUR, Calif. — Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit will extend service to Larkspur, providing a connection to ferries to San Francisco, by mid-December, the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat reports.
The 2-mile extension will be the first addition to SMART service since the commuter rail line began operation in 2017. Service will also begin to a new Novato station on the existing 43-mile route between San Rafael and Santa Rosa.
The $55.4-million extension has taken about 2½ years to complete. It includes an adjacent bike and pedestrian path expected to be finished in 2020.
SMART’s board of directors did not set a specific date for the start of service to Larkspur, but it is expected to begin both there and in Novato well before the Jan. 2 start date for a new schedule approved Wednesday by the board. That schedule includes both stations.
It’s about a half mile hike. Closer to a 15 minute hike. SMART really should have built into the ferry terminal.
I still haven’t seen any pictures of what the walkway from the railway to the boat looks like. As people have described there is a pedestrian bridge over S.F.D. Blvd into an office park.

Anna, the station is on the north side of Sir Francis Drake. There’s a pedestrian bridge over S.F.D. but my guess is that it will be a six- to eight-minute walk to the ferry. That’s fine on a warm, sunny day but it’ll be a long walk on a wet, windy night in February.
Does this take you right into the ferry terminal or does it drop you off at the bridge on Sir Francis Drake and you have to hike it from there?

This is a pretty neat extension, once it is in operation you will be able to take a ferry boat from SF or Oakland/Alameda and then get off the boat at Larkspur then take the train all the way to Santa Rosa.
