No. 4325 is also unique in that in addition to the special long hood logo, the road numbers on the cab side and the number boards are the same font that was used by the Detroit & Mackinac — the company that once operated the trackage currently operated by the Lake State Railway.
Metro East Industries in East St. Louis, Ill., rebuilt the former Lake State Railway No. 1169 and equipped it with a new ZTR Nexsys III control system, allowing it to be set up as a road-slug mother.
When the unit is shipped from Metro East and arrives back in Michigan, it will be used on trains around the 300-mile Lake State Railway system.
Very nice looking equipment.
Alas the Wawatam has gone to the happy hunting grounds.
Where is the best place to observe the Lake State Railway?
Still remembering the Detroit & Mackinac operation with all the Alco power (never enough coverage in the national magazines), but continued success to the successor, Lake State Railway, with this attractive scheme.
Bring back the D&M!
One can only invision these neat looking units hauling freight all the way up to Mackinaw City and pushing loads onto the car ferry Wawatam. Alas, a quick reality check reminds us that the tracks end at Alpena. So sad.
Very sharp paint job.
Nice detail with the D&M inspired numbers. Eye catching unit!
