HUBBARD SPRINGS, Va. — Carolinas-bound coal returned to CSX Transportation’s Cumberland Valley Subdivision on Jan. 22, as southbound loaded coal train N759-20 crossed the stretch of railroad on its journey to Duke Energy’s Marshall Steam Station in Terrell, N.C. The 103-car move of eastern Kentucky coal was the first Duke Energy train to cross the subdivision in the past several months. The line sees only sparse traffic now, following years of declines in coal shipments and the rerouting of some trains off the line. It is not clear if any other North Carolina-bound coal trains are profiled for the subdivision, which was once an important corridor for the Louisville & Nashville railroad and successor CSX.
