According to a Facebook post, the city is seeking to sell the former depot building, located on Railroad Street in Mt. Sterling, and is soliciting sealed bids for the building and adjacent property, which measures at just under one-third of an acre. Bids for the station, which once served Mt. Sterling on the now-abandoned former C&O Lexington Subdivision, will be received through Oct. 15, according to the Facebook post.
The Mt. Sterling depot was built in 1910 and served the city until the 1970s. The Lexington Subdivision was abandoned in the mid 1980s following the merger that formed CSX Transportation. The depot was listed with the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places in 1991. According to the website LandmarkHunter.com, the building is listed due to its historical significance in regard to transportation and architecture.
Trains News Wire reached out to the office of Mt. Sterling Mayor Al Botts for comment. Botts said the city has “no comment” on the sale, referring questions to the city’s bid packet for the sale. According to the packet, the bidder whose bid is “conditionally accepted” will have no longer than six months to submit a proposal for refurbishment of the depot building to the city. Upon the acceptance of the refurbishment proposal, the bid will receive final acceptance, the packet says. Those wishing to bid on the depot may contact Mt. Sterling City Hall, at (859) 498-8725.
