OLEAN, N.Y. — Now we know what the big Montreal diesel vanquishers on the Western New York & Pennsylvania look like.

WNY&P No. 6002, formerly CSX No. 5009, has emerged in a solid black paint scheme that should make Erie Railroad fans happy. The railroad, famous for its fleet of operating six-axle Montreal Works-built Alco-type diesels, is designating the units, which have 16-cylinder, 5,800-hp Gevo motors, an AC46AH. The GEs will replace the big Alcos.

While two parts locomotives to back up the new GEs are nearing the final leg of their trip on Norfolk Southern, preparations for shipping No. 6002 are under way. It will leave the Arkansas & Missouri, where it was readied, early next week. The final two units purchased were tested after overhaul on July 23. All that remains now is paint prep and shipment of the remaining five. The units will go out one at a time about every two weeks. That will place the last ones on the WNY&P property in mid-September; they’ll arrive just in time for the last opportunities for MLW’s in pre-fall colors.

  1. We had these AC6000’s brand new in 1999 at CSX. They were without question the most powerful, best performing locomotive’s, I ever operated on the Boston Line “old B&A”. They had outstanding pulling power, distinct sound and the dynamic brake was extraordinary. They always responded the way you wanted them to, in any situation. I retired in 2008 with a pair on Train L420-27 Engines 5008 – 655 Selkirk to Boston.

  2. Ran those while I worked at csx they were the best and fastest pullers period the acceleration to track speed was great when they were 6000 hp ,dynamic brakes would bring a coal train to a stop two of those units mued together on a piggyback train at 70 mph before csx dropped the speed on the A LINE to 60 was unforgettable . My only complaint was the cab would rattle and shake like hell a GE thing

  3. A take on the Clinchfield? This simple paint scheme shows that it doesn’t have to be all splashed up to be attractive.

I think you mean their 3rd career as they were just recently PRLX lease units and spent some time being leased to Norfolk Southern before being sold to Western New York & Pennsylvania, but yes talk about time flying.
By the way, I agree nice paint scheme for these AC6000s.

  5. Talk about time flying. I remember when these units were brand new on CSX now into their second career..

  6. Are you sure about that 5,800 hp GEVO figure? I thought they were originally 6,000 hp units downgraded to 4400.
