MOUNT WASHINGTON, N.H. — The Mount Washington Cog Railway helped rescue an injured hiker on the east’s tallest peak over the weekend.
On June 22, a 46-year-old Indiana man was injured while hiking to the summit of Mount Washington. The man, identified by the Associated Press as Michael Couch, is an amputee who was raising money for the Lost Limbs Foundation.
Wardens with the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department asked for the help from the Cog Railway to help rescue the man. The railroad, which at the time was in the middle of a celebration for its 150th anniversary, rounded up a crew and a train and headed up the mountain. Within an hour of the call, the train arrived at Couch’s side.
This is not the first time the Cog Railway has rescued an injured hiker. In 2010, a New Jersey man caught a ride on the cog after injuring himself on a trail near the tracks.
