FORT WORTH, Texas — Wabtec celebrated today the 1,000th Evolution Series Tier 4 Locomotive at its plant in Fort Worth. The milestone delivery to Canadian National highlights the commercial success of the locomotive, which set the standard for environmental performance in the freight-rail industry.

“This achievement underscores our bold decision in 2013 to develop a Tier 4 locomotive,” said Rafael Santana, Chief Executive Officer of Wabtec’s Freight Division. “Delivering 1,000 locomotives in less than five years proves it was the right locomotive at the right time to meet market needs.”

The locomotive’s proven capabilities, value, reliability, and industry-leading environmental performance have established it as the preferred choice among North American freight railroads.

“Our investment into these Tier 4 locomotives is integral to our growth and reflects our focus on leveraging technology to improve safety, efficiency and productivity,” said JJ Ruest, President and Chief Executive Officer of CN. “These fuel-efficient, AC traction, locomotives combined with our investments in additional capacity across our network will help our railroaders serve our customers safely and efficiently.”

The Evolution Series Tier 4 was the first freight locomotive to meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Tier 4 emission standards. It decreased emissions by more than 70 percent compared to the Tier 3 locomotive without the need for aftertreatment. This Tier 4 saved railroad customers more than $1.5 billion in urea infrastructure and operational costs.

When combined with Wabtec’s digital solutions, like Trip Optimizer, the added functionality enabled the locomotive to realize 3 to 17 percent savings on fuel costs and further emission reductions.

“The success of the Evolution Series Tier 4 Locomotive has exceeded all of our expectations,” said Santana. “That is a tribute to our employees, suppliers and customers. Their support was essential in making this locomotive such a success in the market.”

Since delivering the first production model to BNSF Railway, the Evolution Series Tier 4 Locomotive has joined six Class 1 railroads and two mining companies in North America. The growing fleet already has completed more than 100 million miles of revenue service, the equivalent of hauling freight from Seattle to Miami approximately 30,000 times. They also have accumulated more than 2,500 locomotive years of operation.

  1. Brett,
Progress Rail is progressing, the CSX SD70ACe-T4s are in production at Muncie, IN. And we should start to see them next month. The Norfolk Southern Tier 4 ACe’s (SD70ACe-T4s) are scheduled to be delivered in June. It’s unclear when the BNSF SD70ACeP4T4s will arrive.

The F125s are still a working Progress but are doing better as they are running for long periods of time without failures but still have some minor issues.

They are getting there though, there are rumors floating around that even Canadian National is reconsidering Progress Rail.

  2. This feels a bit like calling the Sears Tower the Willis Tower, in that the GEVO isn’t a Wabtec product, but a General Electric one. Despite the Evolution Series being the culmination of over half a decade of progress by GE, their name isn’t even mentioned one time in the article. No matter what name they put on the machine, it will remain a GE product.

  3. Brett Reid,Really nothing.Bill Ainsworth just got moved out of his position over Progress Rail & rightfully so to

  4. Scott,
It is footnoted for what it is, a Wabtec Freight news release which Trains has posted verbatim.

  5. Anyone else pick up on the fact that this article reads more like a product endorsement than a news article?
