Big Boy No. 4004 will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to noon on April 27.

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Cheyenne’s other Big Boy is accepting visitors for a brief time Saturday.

For those who planned to watch Union Pacific 4-8-4 No. 844 go west Saturday to Ogden, Utah, a trip that has been cancelled and the Northern added to No. 4014’s inaugural run on May 4, you can still visit a Big Boy locomotive tomorrow: No. 4004 in Cheyenne’s Holliday Park. The engine will be available for public tours from 10 a.m. to noon.

Wasatch Railroad Contractors completed a cosmetic restoration on the locomotive in 2018. It rests not far from the steam shop, where UP’s steam crew is finishing work on No. 4014.
Representatives of the contractor will be on site to talk about the project and answer questions. The fenced enclosure that protects the engine will be open.

  1. The solo run with #844 this week was cancelled, but #844 will double-headed with #4014 Cheyenne to Ogden and back. I would prefer to see #4014 leading with no helper, but will be happy to see both of these engines steaming.

  2. So …4014 will not be ‘on point’ for a solo and inaugural re-run? What’s up with this? Notice that this schedule change occurred AFTER ridership tickets went on sale at $3000-$5000 a pop. I’ve already seen 4014 towed by diesel to Cheyenne. Now we get to see it towed to Ogden!

  3. To Jim Wrinn, I have a question to ask, I know 4014 is going to Ogden on May 9th( or a few days before so as to arrive in Ogden by May 9th), and that 844, which was originally supposed to do a double header with 4014, is now canceled? I had heard that the two engines were going to run separate trips and meet in Ogden, but now the 844 will not be going out to Ogden at all? Please e-mail me back a.s.a.p. and let me and others know. Thank you Jim.

  4. What a crock of s***! I’m sure she would love to accept legitimate visitors at other times of the year, but I realize there is just too much of a vandalism risk in Holliday Park… Such a shame. I’m sure plenty of lucky folks (especially the locals) who get step into her personal space beyond the fence and touch her tomorrow will be whispering, “Hey, baby girl… Did ya miss me?”… 4004 would definitely be happy to oblige. She is probably jealous of her sister, 4014, getting all the major attention in downtown Cheyenne. Haha
