SACRAMENTO — Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Transit Administration arrived Friday at the site of a collision of two Sacramento light rail trains that injured 27.
On Thursday night, a train being tested by three maintenance workers collided with an in-service train. [See “Sacramento light-rail collision injures 27,” Trains News Wire, Aug. 23, 2019.] Thirteen people were taken to area hospitals for treatment, although all had been released by Friday. The Sacramento Bee reports that one train, being tested by three maintenance workers, had moved a few hundred yards from the transit system’s yard when it collided with an in-service train carrying 24 passengers. Fifteen ambulances and more than 40 firefighters were dispatched to the scene.
The trains remained at the site of the accident while investigators inspected the site; as of Sunday morning, a bus bridge was continuing to substitute for rail service through the area. The investigation is seeking to determine if the accident was because of human error or mechanical failure.
