NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk Southern will pay Virginia and the city of Norfolk about $2.4 million as a result of its announced plan to move its headquarters to Atlanta.
The Virginian-Pilot reports the funds represent a repayment of incentives the company received as part of a 2016 agreement to keep its headquarters in Norfolk until at least 2026.
In an email, NS Vice President of Corporate Communications Tom Werner told the newspaper, “We recognized that the spirit in which the two agreements were forged was no longer intact, and immediately set about setting things right with the City and the Commonwealth in accordance with our corporate values.”
