MADISON, Wis. – The Center for Railroad Photography & Art seeks to grant docent scholarships to young or emerging photographers or visual artists to attend its annual “Conversations” conference in Lake Forest, Ill., to be held Sept. 13-15, 2019. Up to four applicants who demonstrate financial need and creative work may be awarded docent scholarships, which provide attendance, lodging, and partial travel expenses in exchange for limited volunteer service and making a 10-minute presentation about their photography or art at the conference. The deadline to apply is July 19, 2019; applicants will be notified of their status by July 26, 2019.
Docent scholarships are specifically available to young and/or emerging photographers and visual artists. Applications are thus restricted to individuals producing photography or other visual works of art focusing on rail related subjects. The docent scholarship is a one-time grant. Recipients are not eligible for future docent scholarship grants.
Scheduled presenters for 2019 include Ben Bachman, contemporary photography; Gil Bennett, paintings; Jennifer Bodine, her father Aubrey Boudine’s photography; Barre Fong, descendants of Chinese workers; John Free, social documentary photography from the Los Angeles freight yards; OrenHelbok, photography with his father, Jon; Ron Perisho, transcontinental railroad stereoviews; and Eric Williams, contemporary photography.
