— One year after a huge celebration of the 150th anniversary of the driving of the Golden Spike, there will be no celebration at all. This year’s annual commemoration at the Golden Spike National Historical Park, set for May 10, has been cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Brandon Flint, incoming superintendent of the park, said in a press release that this year’s commemoration will be held “on a more individual and personal level. Visitors can find commemorative videos, stories, and photos on the park website and Facebook page to learn about the day that forever changed our nation. The park, its visitor center, and its bookstore remain closed.
— In moves related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the South Shore Line will offer free rides for doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel for the months of May and June, and is making its May monthly tickets valid through the end of June. South Shore President Michael Noland said the commuter line wants to express its “sincere appreciation” to front-line health care workers. Details are available here. The commuter railroad says that the ticket move reflects the extension of Illinois’ stay-at-home order until May 30, and an understanding “that our passengers may continue to have differing travel schedules for the next few months.” More details on the monthly ticket situation are available here.
— San Diego’s Metropolitan Transit System is joining the list of agencies requiring passengers to wear face masks or other coverings. The requirement takes effect Friday, May 1, in response to a new San Diego County health order requiring face coverings whenever a member of the public comes within six feet of another person. Masks must be worn at all times while riding transit, including at stations and transit centers. Details are available here.
