WASHINGTON — The Federal government has a new top safety executive.

Karl Alexy is now serving as the Federal Railroad Administration’s Associate Administrator for Safety and is the agency’s chief safety officer.

Alexy assumes the post from Robert C. Lauby, who retired from the agency earlier this year.

According to the FRA’s website Alexy joined the FRA in 2009 as a general manager in the hazardous materials division, and later became that division’s staff director in 2012. He was promoted to become director of the office of safety analysis at the FRA in 2015.

He is a graduate of Bloomsburg and Drexel universities in Pennsylvania. He is a licensed professional engineer in Maryland.
