ST. LOUIS — Amtrak’s board of directors will hold a public meeting on Dec. 1 at the Union Station Hotel in St. Louis, the company has announced, with the public invited to attend in person or on line.
The meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. CST, and will review fiscal 2022 and provide an overview of strategic priorities and the operating plan for fiscal 2023, which began in September.
In-person or on-line registration is available here. There is a Nov. 23 registration deadline, and participation will be limited.
Board members include Amtrak CEO Stephen Gardner, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and five individuals whose appointments have been confirmed by the senate: Chairman Anthony R. Coscia; Vice Chairman Jeffry R. Moreland; Yvonne Brathwaite Burke; Thomas C. Carper; and Albert DiClemente. Information on board members is available here.
The meeting site was an Amtrak station until 1978, when the passenger operator vacated for a redevelopment project. It is now a Hilton hotel.
Why does anyone think they intend to listen to their public bill payers or understand anything that was said anyway?
I often wonder the same thing. Why are some railfans so naive?
St. Louis Union Station was once the busiest station in the world, and now it’s a hotel, pathetic. And the station that’s replaced it is non-descript. A great example of what shouldn’t happen!
Remember the first generation of “Amshacks”? Ann Arbor and Cincinnati that I boarded at, elsewhere Richmond and Jacksonville. Kansas City and I believe Buffalo had similar experiences. Some of these stations (Jacksonville, Cincinnati) were in out-of-the-way locations.
Those were the Taj Mahal compared to Amtrak’s temporary trailers outside of Detroit Michigan Central, before Amtrak moved to the current station at New Center. Detroit New Center is in a perfect location but to borrow Ray Renner’s term (above) “nondescript”.
The Saint Louis depot is incredible… well worth the visit if in the area. The wife and I spent the better part of a day there in awe of its incredible architecture.
Or why a third party contractor is not being used to help clear the backlog. Lots of them out there.
James, I’ve been wondering about that too for some time. I know that Amtrak claims the work is too specialized but I tend to doubt that couldn’t be solved. I suspect its mainly because the Amtrak unions don’t ever want to open the door to any outside contractors as it could spread to other Amtrak operations.
I would like to see some transparency about the number and types of LD cars bad-ordered at Beech Grove, and the calendar for repair and return to service. Also rate of LD cars cycling through for upgrade or periodic maintenance, and whether this aspect is current or behind schedule.
Someone needs to ask about New order of Superliners car order and more Viewliners cars too. Wish i could go.
A ship of fools.
Clear the airplane parking lot, here come the executive private jets!!
I wonder if there will be an update relating to the replacement of the long distance cars, I know that the replacement process will take time, and that there’s definitely not gonna be an order tomorrow, but I would like to know if they’re like figuring out designs or talking to manufacturers or something.
Will they take an airplane or a special train?
Ed Burns
Airplane.
Taking an airplane to an AMTRAK board meeting is telling all that your don’t like to ride your own trains! HYPOCRISY!
Ed Burns
They don’t want to have their sleeper rooms (or the entire train) cancelled at the last minute.
Or arrive so late that they miss the meeting. If they are coming from Washington DC, I hope they plan a layover day in Chicago so they can be sure of their connection.
So what else is new under the Sun? But if these folks do not ride Amtrak round trip from their starting point I sure hope that gets a huuuuuuuGe amount of publicity.
My reply was supposed to be to Mr. Burns’ “HYPOCRISY”.
Cannot take a special train. T&E doesn’t have enough on one or more districts to run a special ?
