  1. UP profits up, service down, derailments in a yard…operating ratio 10 points below zero….if their trains are curbing service, their slogan ‘we can handle it” certainly is a big fat lie. Can someone write a sad country song over this please???

  2. All these derailments all of a sudden. The Class I railroads are falling apart. We need nationalization now.

    1. Do you really think rail investment and service will improve under the Federal government?

  3. Perhaps this is not the place for my comment, but what is the disposition of the cars in the Auto Racks? Are they evaluated for condition, and possibly delivered to dealers for sale as new cars, or are they dealt with in various ways depending on condition.

    1. Automobiles which are carried on rack cars that are involved in a derailment are sent to scrap, regardless of apparent condition. The railroad pays for the loss.

    2. When a ballast tank failed on a shipment of Mazda automobiles, it made the ship lean over until they could get it fixed. 3 Mazdas broke away from their strappings and wrapped themselves around some support beams in the ship. 6 other Mazdas were also damaged from the lean over event.

The other 243 cars were not impacted, but due to the insurnace claim those cars under any circumstance could not be sold.

The ship finally made it to the Port of Portland where the cars were offloaded to a high security recieving area and a firm was hired to remove all of the airbags. 2 compactors were then brought in and the cars were all crushed and sent to a smelter in South Korea.

The area had 24×7 surveillance and 12 foot barbwire fences with spiked entrances. Many people begged and pleaded with the insurance company to sell them or part them out but they refused. Several people made attempts to steal a few but were foiled.

Same thing happened to a shipment of Volvo’s to the US. The ship got into rough seas in the English Channel and partially sank. The ship was tugged to France, where the same thing was done. Airbag removal then scrapyard.

  4. “It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood, it’s a wonderful day in the neighborhood” wont you derail? Please won’t you derail?
