INDEPENDENCE, Ohio — The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen has decisively ratified a new contract with the Long Island Rail Road, with 84.97% of votes cast in favor of the agreement.
Almost 74% of those eligible voted on the contract, the union said in announcing the agreement on Wednesday, Dec. 7. The four-year agreement for approximately 500 locomotive engineers addresses pay, health and welfare and pension benefits, and work rules. The union did not release details of the agreement.
The agreement came after the union requested a federal mediator in early 2021.
“I am pleased that the parties reached an agreement that the membership determined to ratify,” the union’s LIRR General Chairman, Kevin J Sexton said. “I appreciate the assistance of Vice President [James P.] Louis and our assigned mediator, A. M. Tosi. I want to thank the LIRR’s newly appointed Deputy Chief Labor Relations Officer, Kelli Coughlin, for her hard work bringing this round to a close.”
