BENNET, Neb. — Ten cars of a BNSF coal train derailed Friday evening on a recently reactivated line southeast of Lincoln, Neb.
The Lincoln Journal Star reports portions of the train still on the tracks initially blocked traffic on Bennet Road, but crews were able to separate the train to allow traffic flow to resume. KOLN-TV reports the accident occurred about 5:20 p.m. on Friday and left three cars on their side while seven others remained upright, according to a BNSF statement which said no one was injured. While an investigation is ongoing, news reports indicated heavy rain had preceded the derailment.
The derailment occurred on a line between Lincoln and Nebraska City, Neb., that was reactivated after 17 years to serve an Omaha Public Power District power plant. BNSF test trains last December compacted ballast on the route and allowed crew certification [see “Digest: DC Metro releases report…,” Trains News Wire, Dec. 11, 2020].
TRAINS, it would be useful if you did some translating and told us the older names for these lines. Is it CNW (or CMO or CGW–not likely). Since it’s BNSF it’s probably CBQ or maybe GN which had an odd line in that direction. Must consult the SPV Atlas if I’m really interested. I bought an entire set of SPV Atlases just for that reason about 15 years ago which cost around 450 or so.
