WASHINGTON — Union Pacific has granted BNSF Railway temporary trackage rights over its lines between Stockton and Keddie, Calif., for the movement of unit ballast trains to and from a quarry at Elsey, Calif.

The trackage rights, disclosed in a regulatory filing this week, cover UP’s Oakland, Sacramento, and Canyon subdivisions. The 187.5 miles of trackage rights go into effect in January and expire on Dec. 31, 2021.

BNSF will be permitted to run up to three loaded unit trains per week, with a maximum train length of 2,400 feet. BNSF will use the ballast for maintenance of way projects.

The ballast pit at Elsey is located between Sacramento and Keddie.
