BNSF train derails in northeastern Montana (updated)

BNSF Railway logoPOPLAR, Mont. — Approximately a dozen cars of a BNSF freight train derailed today (Feb. 16, 2025) near the town of Poplar, KRTV-TV reports. No injuries were reported.

The incident occurred about 7 a.m. near U.S. Route 2; video on the KRTV website showed several grain hoppers that have spilled their load. According to the Weather Underground website, the temperature was minus-21 degrees Fahrenheit about the time of the derailment.

A BNSF customer advisory estimates the line will be reopened about 9 a.m. MT on Monday, Feb. 17.

Poplar, population 759 as of the 2020 census, is on BNSF’s Glasgow Subdivision, 85 miles west of Williston, N.D., and 72 miles east of Glasgow, Mont.
