RICHMOND, Va. — The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority on Thursday announced it has selected a construction consortium for the second part of the Long Bridge Project, the new two-track bridge across the Potomac River between Washington, D.C., and Arlington, Va.
Long Bridge Rail Partners — a joint venture of Trumbull Corp., Fay, S&B USA Construction, and Wagman Heavy Civil, Inc. — will be the construction partner for the Long Bridge-South Package, which covers construction from the Rosslyn Interlocking in Arlington to the northern abutment of the new Long Bridge, in East Potomac Park in the District of Columbia. The package includes the two-track rail bridge over the George Washington Memorial Parkway and the river; a 16-foot-wide bicycle and pedestrian bridge; and related infrastructure.
“The selection of Long Bridge Rail Partners completes the team that will build the largest of our Transforming Rail in Virginia projects, which will significantly change the way Virginians travel,” VRPA Executive Director DJ Stadtler said in a press release. VPRA Board Chair Tiffany Robinson, director of the state’s Department of Rail and Public Transportation, said the state’s investment in rail “will benefit passengers as well as our freight partners up and down the east coast. Long Bridge is vital to this expansion. We look forward to working with Long Bridge Rail Partners on this project which will reshape rail service in the Commonwealth.”
The project’s North Package was awarded to a Skanska-Flatiron Joint Venture in December 2023. Overall cost of the project is estimated at $2.3 billion. The project will double capacity across the Potomac, currently constrained by CSX Transportation, Amtrak, and Virginia Railway Express sharing two tracks. More information on the project is available at the VRPA website.
Wow! This will be a fantastic train watching site, one to be featured as part of Trains railfan hotspot list.
Compare the passenger train (including commuter train) count now, to May 1, 1971. Different league altogether.
