Caltrain logoSAN CARLOS, Calif. — Caltrain will upgrade safety at five grade crossings after receiving $1 million in federal funding as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, the commuter rail agency has announced.

Funds will improve grade crossings at two crossings in San Francisco (16th Street and Mission Bay Drive), as well as Whipple Avenue in Redwood City, Ravenswood Avenue in Menlo Park, and East Meadow Drive in Palo Alto.

“Safety is core value at Caltrain that underlies everything we do,” Michelle Bouchard, Caltrain executive director, said in a press release. “This funding will help to improve safety at grade crossings, protecting the public, keeping our trains moving and making getting around the Bay Area more convenient. We’re grateful to Congressmembers [Anna] Eshoo and [Kevin] Mullin for their advocacy on behalf of safer public transit.”

Improvements at the crossings will include signage, LED pavement markers, pedestrian channelization, track panels, stop bars, and gate relocation.
