WINDSOR, Ontario — The Canadian government and Essex Terminal Railway will combine on a project to expand warehouse capacity and improve transloading at the Port of Windsor, officials announced Tuesday.
The government will provide C$5 million in funding for the project, which Transport Minister Omar Alghabra said in a press release is “critical to maintaining a competitive, resilient, and fluid supply chain.” The railroad will provide $6.2 million for the project, which will increase capacity and efficicency of transloading at Morterm Ltd. The government money will come from the National Trade Corridors Fund. The fund has a total of C$4.6 billion to disburse over an 11-year period through 2028.
The Essex Terminal operates 33.5 miles of track, with direct connections to Canadian Pacific, Canadian National, and CSX Transportation. Its 21.7-mile main line between Windsor and Amherstburg, Ont., roughly parallels the Detroit River. More information on the railroad is available at its website.
That I know of, the Port of Windsor mostly handles road salt, the salt mines being under the Detroit River, which is also the international boundary. “Morterm” in the article is apparently a reference to Morton Salt, a company that once owned the railroad.
