TORONTO — The Toronto Transit Commission will receive almost Ca$1.2 billion in federal funding, with more than half ticketed for 55 new subway cars, Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland announced on Friday, Nov. 29.

Some $758 million of the federal funds, to be provided over the next decade from the new Canada Public Transit Fund, will go to the cars for TTC’s Line 2, the 31-station, 26.2-kilometer (16.3-mile) between Etobicoke and Scarborough.

“The TTC needs new subway cars to keep up with the growing transit demands of our growing city,” Freeland said in a press release. “I am so pleased that just months after announcing our new Canada Public Transit Fund, that we will have reached a deal with Toronto to deliver better public transit.” Toronto Mayor Olvia Chow said the federal funding “is a welcome investment in Toronto that unlocks additional funding from the province. … By partnering and funding one third each, it shows how we can work together to keep people moving.”

The current Line 2 subway equipment dates to 1996, and the full cost of replacing the fleet is estimated at almost Ca$2.3 billion. A TTC representative told the CBC in an email that the agency plans to award the contract for the new equipment early in 2026, with deliveries beginning in 2030.
