VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Canada’s federal government will provide $C1.3 billion in funding toward extension of the SkyTrain Expo Line from Surrey to Langley, B.C., Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced during a Friday visit to Surrey.

The Vancouver Sun reports the federal funding represents 40% of the 9.9-mile extension, which will include eight new stations and three bus exchange locations. The project costs also include 30 additional SkyTrain cars.

The provincial government has pledged to pay 40% of the costs, with SkyTrain’s parent organization, TransLink, providing the other 20%.

Preliminary work, such as utility relocation, will begin this summer, with construction coming after completion of the required business case, which is expected next year.

Trudeau also announced the federal government will pay 40% of the cost for the study of another proposed extension to the University of British Columbia. That would come after completion of an extension of SkyTrain’s Millennial Line that is already in progress.
