CALGARY, Alberta — Canadian Pacific has released its 2020 corporate sustainability report, touting its emission reduction targets, development of a hydrogen-powered locomotive, and fuel-efficiency efforts as part of a report that addresses social programs and safety as well as environmental efforts.
“We are proud to publish this report, outlining the achievements we have realized on our journey to be sustainably driven,” CEO Keith Creel said in a press release. “CP is continually looking for impactful ways to incorporate sustainability into all aspects of our business and maintain our position as a sustainability leader in the rail industry.”
Also highlighted by the report is the company’s installation of a 5-megawatt solar farm at its Calgary headquarters. The railroad has achieved a 44% improvement in locomotive fleet fuel efficiency since 1990, according to the report.
Social efforts include establishment of three councils focused on racial, gender, and indigenous diversity, and $1 million in donations to three charities “dedicated to strengthening communities in response to the social injustice and social unrest across the U.S.”
In the area of safety, the railroad achieved its lowest-ever Federal Railroad Administration reportable personal injury frequency rate, with personal injuries down 22% from 2019.
