MACOUN, Saskatchewan — A derailment and fire involving a Canadian Pacific train near the town of Macoun has closed a highway and led to the evacuation of a small number of homes, the Regina Leader-Post reports.
At least four homes were evacuated and Provincial Route 39 was closed because of the fire involving an unknown number of tank cars. Video posted to Twitter by Global News shows at least 20 cars derailed.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police reported the derailment and closure just before 11:30 a.m. CST; the fire was still burning about four hours later, according to the Leader-Post.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada announced it is deploying a team of investigators to the scene of the derailment.
Macoun is about 20 miles north of the border with North Dakota and about 100 miles southeast of Regina.
