POUND, Wis. — One person was killed and an unknown number of cars of an Escanaba & Lake Superior train were derailed after a chain-reaction highway accident at a grade crossing in the Town of Pound on Wednesday.
WBAY-TV reports Marinette County Sheriff Jerry Sauve says the accident occurred in dense fog and involved vehicles including two dump trucks, an empty logging truck, a box truck and other vehicles. Two of the trucks were pushed into the train at the crossing, killing one of the drivers. Visibility at the time was estimated at 50 to 100 feet.
The accident blocked State Route 64 near U.S. Route 141 and has led to establishment of a “long-term” detour for Route 141.
Pound is about 40 miles north of Green Bay.
