Canadian National set a single-month record for movement of Western Canadian grain in October, the company said, moving more than 3.23 million metric tons.
Canadian Pacific also set a grain-movement record for the month, moving 3.14 metric tons. This surpassed its previous best month by 100,000 metric tons.
CN’s figure exceeded its previous best month, October 2020, by more than 50,000 metric tons. It came in a month when the railroad also set a single-week record for grain movement [see “CN sets weekly Canadian grain volume record,” Trains News Wire, Oct. 24, 2022].
“Our performance is a testament to what can be accomplished through supply chain cooperation and collaboration,” Doug MacDonald, CN’s executive vice president and chief marketing officer, said in a press release. “When the end-to-end supply chain runs well, we can move grain to ports and return railcars quickly to elevators to get more grain on the move. We would like to thank our supply chain partners for their part in this accomplishment and we look forward to continuing to work together.”
CP said its record also bested a mark set in October 2020. Through 13 weeks of the 2022-23 crop year, the railroad has moved more than 6.9 million metric tons of grain and grain products.
“Transporting record volumes of grain would not be possible without the significant investment that has been made by our customers in new and upgraded grain-handling capacity and investment made by CP in infrastructure and high-capacity hopper cars,” Joan Hardy, CP vice president sales and marketing, grain and fertilizers, said in a press release. “CP’s 8,500-foot High Efficiency Product (HEP) model is adding much-needed capacity to allow more grain to move than ever before.”
