VIA Rail Canada logoMONTREAL — VIA Rail Canada service between Toronto and Montreal, already struggling to cope with a massive snowstorm, was further disrupted today (Feb. 18, 2025) by a Canadian National derailment near Montreal.

The 12-car derailment occurred at CN’s Taschereau Yard near Lachine and adjacent to Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport. CN said no leaks or injuries resulted.

VIA said in a social media post shortly before 1 p.m. ET that its trains were stopped at nearby Dorval, and that the derailment was causing “considerable delays and cancellations of certain trains.” About two hours later, VIA announced that some train movements had resumed but that significant delays would continue.

VIA cancelled 14 trains in the Windsor-Quebec City corridor today, and has already cancelled 10 on Wednesday, Feb. 19. Details are available in the service status section of the VIA website.

Commuter rail operator Exo, which operates on a parallel CPKC line through the same area, cancelled many of its afternoon trains today, the CBC reports, but that was related to switch issues resulting from the almost 75 centimeters (29.5 inches) of snow that had fallen in four days
