MONTE VISTA, Colo. — The San Luis Central reopens its main line running the first train to operate since May 24, 2024. Here, it crosses an irrigation canal on newly installed culverts that repaired a washout on this section of line on Sept. 9, 2024.

Electro-Motive SW8, No. 70, with General Manager Tom Tancula at the throttle, had one covered hopper, which it had picked up at Monte Vista. The car was taken to the other end of the line at Center to be loaded with dried potatoes used for dog food.

At Center, number 70 picked up five empty tank cars that had been loaded with nitrogen fertilizer and returned them to the interchange with the Colorado Pacific Rio Grande Railroad at Monte Vista.

Tancula indicated the San Luis Central hasn’t lost any business during the embargo due to it ability to transload at Monte Vista.

  1. I see both good news and bad news in this photo. The good news: the SLC is running again. The bad news: it is increasingly difficult to find a freight car NOT defaced with graffiti!
