CRAVEN, Saskatchewan — A Canadian Pacific derailment Tuesday night has blocked a major provincial highway, leaving a mass of damaged cars adjacent to a grade crossing.
The Lumsden, Sask., Fire Department reported about 10 p.m. Tuesday that it was responding to a derailment, and subsequently reported that the grade crossing of Provincial Route 20 was “expected to be blocked for some time.”
In response to a Trains News Wire inquiry, Canadian Pacific said there were no injuries in the accident and no public safety concerns. The railroad has dispatched crews and resources to clean up the site. The railroad did not indicate how many cars were involved; the CBC reports 26 cars derailed.
The cause is under investigation.
CKOM Radio reports the derailment occurred on a bitterly cold night, with temperatures around minus-38 Celcius (minus-36 Fahrenheit) with a wind chill of minus-44 (minus-47).
The Village of Craven is about 20 miles north-northwest of Regina, Sask.

Could well be.
I’d assume a rail break at those temps.
