CPKC logoWINNIPEG, Manitoba — A major Winnipeg street has been reopened after being closed by the derailment Friday of a CPKC train.

Global News reports Winnipeg police announced the reopening of McPhillips Street with a Twitter post at 2:02 a.m. Saturday, after previously saying the street could be closed for several days.

The CBC reported the derailment of 12 tank cars occurred about 8 a.m. Friday on a bridge over McPhillips, a major north-south route through the city. An evacuation was briefly ordered before it was determined the cars carried bitumen, which is not considered hazardous. None was reported to have spilled, according to an official with the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service.

Police Sgt. Jay Murray told the CBC then that the street would remain closed for a few days, at least, while officials assess the integrity of the bridge, which dates to 1912. The seven-track bridge connects two CPKC yards.

No one was injured in the derailment. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada said in a Friday post on Twitter that it had sent a team of investigators to the accident scene.

A CPKC representative told the CBC the railroad “regrets the inconvenience the incident has caused to motorists.”
