INDIANAPOLIS — Six cars of a CSX train derailed on the southeast side of Indianapolis on Sunday evening (April 6), with five cars falling off a bridge onto a street below and covering it with cornstarch.
The Indianapolis Star reports that the derailment occurred about 6:35 p.m., according to CSX. Indianapolis Fire Department spokeswoman Rita Reith said four of the derailed cars were carrying cornstarch and two were empty. “We have a big mess, is what we have,” Reith said.
No injuries were reported.
Southeastern Avenue was blocked by the derailed cars and spilled load. WFYI radio reports the street is expected to be closed between Earhart Street and Sherman Drive through at least late this afternoon (Monday, April 7) for cleanup.
