JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — CSX Transportation has reached an agreement with the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers-Mechanical Department (SMART-MD) to provide paid sick leave, its ninth such agreement with a union representing CSX workers.
“CSX continues to work collaboratively with all of our union partners to find solutions that improve the quality of life for our valued employees,” CSX CEO Joe Hinrichs said in Friday’s announcement. “… I greatly appreciate the SMART-MD leadership for working with us on this agreement as we continue building momentum and create a more positive work environment for our employees which helps them provide the best service to our customers.”
Earlier in the week, CSX became the first of the Class I railroads to reach a sick-time agreement with an operating union when it announced an agreement with some of its conductors, members of the SMART Transportation Division B&O union [see “CSX becomes first railroad to reach sick time deal with conductors’ union,” Trains News Wire, April 3, 2023]. The agreement is subject to ratification.
