DALLAS — Repairs to the Dallas Area Rapid Transit light rail system in downtown Dallas will continue until at least the evening of Wednesday, July 24, following a Sunday morning accident, the transit agency said Monday.
The light rail system lost power the central business district after a Dallas Fire Rescue truck skidded off an elevated highway and onto a rail line below at about 6 a.m. Sunday [see “Dallas light rail service disrupted …,” Trains News Wire, July 21, 2024]. While repairs are ongoing, bus bridges have been required to service six downtown stations: Cityplace/Uptown, Deep Ellum, Pearl/Arts District, West End, EBJ/Union, and Victory. The buses are operating as a circular shuttle serving those stations. Passengers using the St. Paul/Akard station are taken by bus to CBD West, where they board the Shuttle service for the stations above.
The Dallas Morning News reports the accident caused extensive damage to the DART catenary system, and a photo on the newspaper’s website shows the fire truck tangled in wiring after landing across tracks at a switch.
DART says the ongoing repair work is extensive and passengers should add as much travel time as possible to account for delays. A further update is expected later today (Tuesday, July 23).
What kind of damage did the Flying Fire Rescue Vehicle cause?
Now if the rapid transit cars had been diesel powered instead of electric, service interruption would probably been about 30 minutes.
