WORCESTER, Mass. — Two tank cars of ethanol struck a building after derailing Sunday, but neither car was breached and the structure did not appear to be damaged, according to a fire department official.

The Worcester Telegram & Gazette reports a total of six cars of a Providence & Worcester train derailed, according to a Genesee & Wyoming spokesman. The incident was reported by the railroad about 12:20 p.m. Assistant Fire Chief Adam Roche told the newspaper that no injuries were reported and the incident posed no immediate danger since the ethanol remained contained.

The building at 665 Cambridge Street did not appear to have sustained structural damage, Roche said. Power was cut to the building to eliminate any possible source of ignition. Both cars that struck the building overturned, he said. The railroad was sending crews to remove the ethanol before removing the cars, but since it was expected to take six to eight hours for those crews to arrive, firefighters and a state hazmat team were remaining on scene.

    1. If you are asking me, I don’t know. There are articles Telegram & Gazette, it is a paywalled site after you click on 3 articles though. Also, on the news channel WHDH.COM with good pictures of the derailment.

  1. The derailment was near the beginning of the yard, most likely a very slow accident. The cars behind the derailment didn’t go over the embankment or roll, nor did the ones ahead of the 2 cars that rolled. I live near there so naturally I had to check it out.

  2. It has been reported that P&W teams are now working to clear the overturned tank cars and the cause of the derailment remains under investigation.
