Canadian Prime Minister announces plans for $14.9 billion in transit funding
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced plans to spend C$14.9 billion over the next eight years on public transportation projects, with part of that funding to create a permanent $3 billion per year transit fund. The CBC reports the plan could provide funding for subway extensions, electrifying transit fleets, walkways and cycling paths, and rural mobility projects. “While these investments are good for the economy and crucial to our recovery from this global crisis,” Trudeau said during today’s online announcement, “they’re also helping us achieve our climate goals.”
Lima, Ohio, smart transportation project will alert drivers to delays caused by trains
Lima, Ohio, will be the site of a smart transportation pilot project to alert drivers to traffic delays caused by passing trains and provide navigation assistance. WYSO-FM reports the project is being funded by a grant to the state of Ohio from the Spectrum internet company and nonprofit organization US Ignite. Lima Mayor David Berger said during a recent presentation that 35 trains pass through Lima daily, leading to long traffic delays that can affect the ability of fire trucks and ambulances to respond to emergencies, among other issues. The project will install technology, some of which is still in the developmental stage, to collect data about approaching trains and provide information to drivers.
Two crewmen injured in CN derailment in Escanaba, Mich.
Two crew members were treated for “non-life-threatening injuries” following the derailment of a Canadian National train in Escanaba, Mich., on Tuesday evening. WNMU-FM reports the accident occurred about 8 p.m. No hazardous materials were involved, and traffic was not obstructed. The cause is under investigation. No other information was immediately available.
