CP derailment knocks out power in Field, B.C.
The community of Field, B.C., was at risk of running out of electricity Tuesday night after a Canadian Pacific grain train derailed earlier in the day, knocking out power. The CBC reports the train derailed about 1:40 a.m., taking out a power line. CP reported there were no injuries and it dispatched crews to the area immediately to begin cleanup, but power company BC Hydro says on its website that it did not anticipate having crews on site until 7 a.m. today. Approximately 150 customers are being served by a backup battery, but as of midday Tuesday, that was expected to run out during the night. Cause of the derailment is under investigation.
Cincinnati street closure continues after CSX derailment
A street passing under CSX’s Queensgate Yard in Cincinnati will remain closed through Friday as cleanup continues after a derailment on Sunday. WCPO-TV reports Gest Street will be closed between Evans Street and Dalton Avenue to allow debris to be removed and to inspect the bridge for damage after two locomotives and seven cars derailed. The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that the derailment, which led to several cars stacked up on top of one of the locomotives, involved a train being operated by remote control, and that the railroad said there was no indication remote operation of the locomotives contributed to the accident.
Georgia’s SAM Shortline announces 2021 excursion schedule
Georgia’s SAM Shortline will launch its 2021 excursion season Feb. 13 with a Valentine’s Day Dinner Train. The railroad will offer weekly trips between Cordele and Plains, Ga., on Saturdays, as well as a number of special events throughout the year, including dinner and Wine and Cheese Trains. Day Out with Thomas the Tank Engine excursions are also scheduled to return for three weekends in June. The railroad continues to follow state COVID guidelines, including maintaining ridership at less than capacity, staggered seating to maintain social distancing, and regular cleaning.
