The families of two of the Canadian Pacific crew members killed in the derailment of a runaway CP train in February 2019 are suing the railroad, officials including CEO Keith Creel, police department, and federal agency Transport Canada. The CBC reports the families of accident victims Dylan Paradis and Andrew Dockrell are claiming the railroad emphasized cost-cutting over safety and its police department engaged in a coverup, which the railroad strongly denied. “CP disputes these baseless allegations and will vigorously defend against these claims in court,” the railroad said in a written statement to the CBC. Transport Canada told the broadcaster it is reviewing the claims but won’t comment on an ongoing legal matter. The Feb. 4, 2019, derailment, which also killed trainee Daniel Waldenberger-Bulmer, came when the train lost its brakes descending Kicking Horse Pass near Field, B.C. [see “Investigators: CP grain train ‘started to move on its own,’” Trains News Wire, Feb. 5, 2019]. The lawsuit claims the train reached 57 mph in an area with a 20 mph speed limit before derailing.

11 killed, almost 100 injured in latest rail disaster in Egypt

In the country’s third major passenger rail accident in less than a month, 11 people are reported dead in 98 injured in a derailment in the farming town of Toukh, about 25 miles north of Cairo. Agence France-Presse reports four cars derailed on a train heading from Cairo to Mansoura. Fourteen people with minor injuries have been treated and released from the hospital. The train’s driver and other officials have reportedly been detained for questioning. At least 20 people were killed in a March 26 collision of two trains [see “Digest: Contractor warns of new delays …,” Trains News Wire, March 29, 2021]; authorities have revised the death toll several times. Another derailment last week injured at least 15.
