Twenty-four cars of a Norfolk Southern coal train derailed in Panama, Ill., Sunday morning, according to a Facebook post by the Chris-Mont Emergency Management Agency. A press release from the agency says the Shoal Creek Fire Protection District was dispatched to the derailment at 6:46 a.m. Sunday. No injuries were reported; the fire agency remained on the scene as cleanup continued under the direction of NS, Hulcher Services, and R.J. Corman. Panama is about 45 miles northeast of St. Louis.
Tri-Rail service remains shut down by tropical storm
Service on Miami-area commuter railroad Tri-Rail will be suspended for a second on Monday because of Tropical Storm Eta. The parent South Florida Regional Transportation Authority says service will remain suspended until further notice as the agency continues to monitor the storm, which hit South Florida with heavy rains and high winds beginning Sunday afternoon. UP recalls furloughed workers to DeSoto, Texas, shop
Union Pacific has recalled 125 employees to work at its DeSoto, Texas, car shop. Leader Publications reports the workers are among 200 to 300 who had been furloughed when the shop was shut down April 30. A Union Pacific spokeswoman confirmed workers had been recalled to work at the shop but told the newspaper it does not provide location-specific employee numbers.
