GIBBON, Neb. — Approximately 15 cars of a Union Pacific coal train derailed today (Sunday, July 7) in Gibbon, KGFW Radio reports.
No injuries were reported. The incident was reported to the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office about 2:24 a.m., according to KVRN Radio, and occurred at the intersection of U.S. Route 30 and Pawnee Road on the west side of Gibbon. Traffic on U.S. 30 was not affected.
Gibbon is about 14 miles east of Kearney, Neb., on UP’s Kearney Subdivision and about 173 rail miles west of Omaha.
Gibbon @ Pawnee Road is where the switches are for the UP Marysville Sub. Also known as Gibbon Junction.
It’s three tracks from North Platte to Gibbon Junction. Then the Kearney Sub goes down to two tracks going east. The Marysville Sub is two tracks to the Marysville yard and beyond.
What gives? Gibbon, the east end of the well-known 3-track line running out to near North Platte, had a derailment in the center of town a few years ago (2020?).
