RIDLEY PARK, Pa. — No injuries were reported when at least one car of a Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority Regional Rail train was destroyed by fire this evening (Feb. 6, 2025).

An image shared with local media shows flames and smoke pouring from the windows of a railcar. WPVI-TV reports the incident occurred about 6 p.m. ET, and that about 350 people were evacuated from the six-car Newark Line train near the Crum Lynne Station in Ridley Park. The Delco Daily Times reports that the fire was reported under control by 7:20 p.m.; first responders also had to help evacuate passengers from another train nearby after catenary power was turned off to allow firefighters to work in the area.

The train was en route from Philadelphia to Wilmington, Del., on the Northeast Corridor. SEPTA and Amtrak service was halted as a result, but the Amtrak NEC Alerts feed reports its operations have resumed as of 7:40 p.m. ET. SEPTA’s website indicates service on the Wilmington/Newark line remains suspended as of 10 p.m. ET.

“Very quick action by our crews helped allow this to be a safe outcome,” SEPTA spokesman Andrew Busch told WPVI. “We don’t know where this started, just that it was in the area underneath the train and then obviously engulfed the train in flames.”
