NEW YORK — Amtrak service between New York and New Haven, Conn., has been suspended since midafternoon today (Tuesday, Nov. 12) and is to remain suspended the rest of the day because of a loss of power east of Penn Station, according to an advisory on the Amtrak website.

WABC-TV reports there have been two separate but adjacent substation fires in the Bronx. First was a fire and transformer explosion at a Bronxdale Avenue warehouse about 2:15 p.m. About 15 minutes later, another fire was reported a quarter mile away at an Amtrak substation, as a high voltage feeder line caught fire, causing Amtrak to shut down power to its catenary system.

New York fire officials reported both fires were under control by 5:50 p.m.

Amtrak says trains approaching Penn Station are being moved out of the area at reduced speed using diesel locomotives. There is no estimate when regular service will resume. Metro-North Railroad is honoring Amtrak tickets on trains between Grand Central Terminal and New Haven, but passengers must find their own way from Penn Station to Grand Central.

Some Amtrak trains continue to operate between Boston and New Haven. Up-to-date information is available at the Amtrak NEC Alerts feed on X.com.
